What they are

Umbilical Cord Tissue Mesenchymal Stem Cells

UCT-MSCs are multipotent stromal cells derived from Wharton's jelly, the gelatinous connective tissue within the umbilical cord. They have anti-inflammatory properties and the capacity to differentiate into multiple cell lineages, including osteogenic, chondrogenic, and adipogenic.

Compared to bone marrow-derived MSCs, UCT-MSCs are collected non-invasively at birth from consenting donors, produce consistently high cell counts across production lots, and carry low HLA expression, which removes the need for donor-recipient matching in allogeneic use.

Stem cells secrete growth factors, signaling molecules, and paracrine signals involved in tissue regeneration. MSC-derived exosomes carry this therapeutic cargo in nano-scale extracellular vesicles, enabling targeted cellular communication without direct cell administration.

Differentiation capacity

What UCT-MSCs can become

UCT-MSCs are multipotent, meaning they differentiate within the mesenchymal lineage under appropriate inductive conditions. They are not pluripotent. Verified differentiation capacity includes:

  • Osteoblasts (bone cells), osteogenic differentiation confirmed by Alizarin Red staining
  • Chondrocytes (cartilage cells), chondrogenic differentiation confirmed by Alcian Blue staining
  • Adipocytes (fat cells), adipogenic differentiation confirmed by Oil Red O staining
  • Myocytes (cardiac and skeletal muscle), confirmed by alpha-smooth muscle actin expression
  • Hepatocytes (liver cells), confirmed by albumin secretion and glycogen storage
  • Neural progenitor cells, confirmed by nestin and GFAP expression

How cells are obtained and verified

Every UCT-MSC lot begins with ethically sourced umbilical cord tissue from screened, consenting donors and passes a multi-step verification process before release.

Donor screening

Health history review and infectious disease panel including HIV-1/2, Hepatitis B surface antigen, Hepatitis C, HTLV-I/II, CMV, syphilis (RPR), and West Nile Virus.

Cord tissue collection

Umbilical cord tissue collected non-invasively at birth from consenting donors under sterile conditions. Wharton's jelly is isolated and processed within hours of delivery.

Cell expansion and characterization

Cells are expanded under 3D culture conditions intended to preserve potency and secretome output. Flow cytometry confirms positive markers (CD73, CD90, CD105) and negative markers (CD45, CD34) per ISCT criteria.

Release testing

Every lot undergoes sterility (USP <71>), endotoxin (LAL), mycoplasma (PCR), viability (trypan blue), and NTA particle characterization before release. A Certificate of Analysis ships with every order.
